The Purewa Cemetery Trust Board announced the establishment of the Friends of Purewa group in February 2019.
The aim of the voluntary group is to foster awareness of, and interest in, the history and maintenance of Purewa’s 20-hectare beautiful park-like grounds and gardens, which are the final resting place for more than 55,000 men, women and children in Auckland’s eastern suburbs.
Among activities planned are the introduction of guided walks through the historic parts of the cemetery, and cleaning and restoration of the graves of World War 1 and World War 11 soldiers.
The inaugural Friends of Purewa Coordinator Sue Cooper says she’s excited about the opportunities for local community involvement in Purewa, which was established by the Anglican Church in 1889.
